Patrick Kane picks his sweater number with Red Wings
Number 88 is currently being used by a Red Wings forward.

The Detroit Red Wings have made a considerable splash today, bringing aboard 3-time Stanley Cup winner Patrick Kane. He had been mulling a handful of suitors as he continued his recovery from hip resurfacing surgery, and it was Detroit whom he ultimately chose to give the rose to.
It seems Kane will retain his familiar jersey number, No. 88, which is currently worn by forward Daniel Sprong. Sprong, in his first year with the Red Wings, notably became the first player in team history to don that number. However, reports indicate that Sprong has graciously offered the number to Kane and will opt for a different one as a result.
Beat writer Ansar Khan of MLive has reported that Sprong has volunteered to relinquish the use of No. 88:
"Daniel Sprong has graciously offered to relinquish his No. 88 for Patrick Kane, saying it would be an honor."
Like the team is hoping that Kane will be, Sprong has proven to be a valuable addition to the Red Wings. As of right now, he's on pace to once again eclipse the 20-goal mark, which would be the second straight season he's done so; he scored 21 last year as a member of the Seattle Kraken.
