Patrick Kane comes clean about what is driving him this season.
If the National Hockey League career of Detroit Red Wings forward Patrick Kane were to end today, it would go down as one of the most celebrated hockey careers in modern NHL history.
Kane has won it all with 3 Stanley Cup championships, a Calder Trophy, a Conn Smythe Trophy, an Art Ross Trophy, a Hart Memorial Trophy, a Ted Lindsay Award, and 9 All-Star Games under his belt. Recently however Kane admitted that there is still one prize that eludes him in his professional hockey career, one that he is hoping to claim this season.
In a recent interview, Kane revealed that he is hoping to claim a gold medal for his home country, the United States of America, in a best on best tournament before his career is over.
"The one thing that’s kind of missing is a gold in best-on-best, right?" said Kane as per NHL.com. "It would be fun to have that opportunity."
Kane admitted that watching the recent 4 Nations Face-Off tournament from home was difficult for him, and that he is striving to avoid a similar situation when it comes to the upcoming 2026 Winter Olympic Games.
"I didn’t really expect to make it just the way I was playing, with how many good American players there are," admitted Kane. "Definitely don’t want that to happen again where I’m in a situation where I’m not playing that great and you get left off because of that, right?"
Kane, who captured a silver medal during the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, says that he doesn't want the reputation that he has built over the years to result in him being gifted a spot on Team USA's roster, and instead is hoping to play his way onto the roster this time around.
"I don’t want that to be a thing, either, where you’re getting selected for the team because of all that stuff," said Kane. "You want to be selected for the player you are and what you can bring to the team."
Despite major hip surgery and being 36 years of age Kane has continued to produce offensively for the Detroit Red Wings over the last two seasons, combining for 41 goals and 65 assists for a total of 106 points over his last 122 NHL games. He is no doubt looking to improve that production this season with his eyes on the Olympics, which could mean great news for the Detroit Red Wings this season.
After all we've all seen what a motivated Patrick Kane is capable of.
