Finally we got to find out how Patrick Kane is feeling about the constant trade chatter that has surrounding him the past months. The rebuild strategy that has taken over in Chicago isn’t probably what the star forward had in mind for the remainder of his career.
In recent weeks, GM Kyle Davidson pulled off two large trades on the draft floor in Montreal when first traded star forward Alex DeBrincat to the Ottawa Senators and then shipped out former 3rd overall pick Kirby Dach to the Montreal Canadiens. Many fans and pundits wonder if Kane wants out for another chance at a championship and will demand a trade out of Chicago. Kane has been linked to the Edmonton Oilers, Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Rangers and even his hometown team, the Buffalo Sabres.
Finally on Thursday, insider Frank Seravalli mentioned what he’s heard about Kane and his feelings towards the trade chatter.
Seravalli believes Kane is not willing to be traded before the 2022-23 kicks off as he explained on the DFO Rundown hockey podcast with Jason Gregor:
“That if he is going somewhere, that he would like to go at the deadline or sometime around then. So probably sometime into 2023. Obviously that can change but, I am told the teams that had at least preliminarily discussed or talked about the idea either internally or externally what have you are the New York Rangers, the Edmonton Oilers, the Toronto Maple Leafs - I don’t know pick a team, like the Vegas Golden Knights, one that is always in the mix, has expressed some kind of interest. I wonder about a team like the Los Angeles Kings - like there are many teams that could fit, not salary cap wise, but a star like Patrick Kane in the mix.”
Seravalli isn’t the only one thinking that Kane will want to be patient with a potential trade. On the latest 32 Thoughts podcast, Elliotte Friedman explain how Kane will have a specific strategy in mind, saying how captain Jonathan Toews could have an impact on Kane and how the star forward could wait to see which teams are playing well during the season.
It is easy to understand why Kane will look to join a contender as a playoff rental before the 2023 trade deadline. There is a sense that Kane is after at least one last championship before he hangs up the skates - and we all know that’s not going to happen anytime soon in Chicago.
