A Finnish report reveals Laine's next destination, but one key deal stands in the way.
The offseason rumor mill surrounding Patrik Laine has been churning for weeks, with the Finnish sniper still searching for a new home ahead of the upcoming NHL season. But a fresh report out of Finland may have just revealed where the talented winger could end up next.
According to Finnish journalist Esko Seppanen, reporting via the outlet Urheilucast, Laine has recently met with the Anaheim Ducks regarding a possible contract. The news spread quickly across social media and generated plenty of buzz among hockey fans.
A deal, however, does not appear to be imminent. The same report indicates that Ducks general manager Pat Verbeek wants to resolve the complicated contract situation involving Cutter Gauthier before turning his full attention to any agreement with Laine.
That wrinkle makes Gauthier's negotiations the key domino in this saga. Verbeek got the deal done last night, signing Gauthier to a six-year deal, which carries a $13.5 million AAV for a total of $81 million.
Now that that is taken care of, Laine's timeline remains on pause, but for how long. The Ducks now have $2,073,395 in available cap space.
From a hockey standpoint, Anaheim would make sense as a landing spot for the 28-year-old forward. The Ducks have been in a rebuilding phase for several seasons and are actively looking to inject offensive firepower into their lineup. The club recently had to part ways with forward Chris Kreider due to salary cap constraints, leaving a gap in their attack that a player of Laine's caliber could help fill.
Laine's recent years have been a rollercoaster, marked by personal and professional challenges that have kept him from consistently reaching the elite level he showed early in his career. A fresh start with a rising organization could provide the kind of environment that helps him rediscover the goal-scoring form that once made him one of the most dangerous shooters in the league.
None of the details from the Finnish report have been officially confirmed by either the Ducks or Laine's camp.
Laine’s fate appears closely linked to the Gauthier contract and now that it’s done, the resolution could be the trigger that sets a Laine signing in motion. The coming days could prove pivotal, it all depends on what Laine wants and what the Ducks will be willing to offer.
