Paul Byron tells the true story of the plane crash rescue.

Byron sets the record straight.

Jonathan Larivee

Earlier today we brought you the unbelievably story of a hydroplane crash and rescue in the municipality of Notre-Dame-du-Laus in the Laurentides region of Quebec, one that involved Montreal Canadiens veteran forward Paul Byron.

Byron wasn't involved in the crash itself but was rather out fishing early on Saturday morning when the plane suddenly came crashing down just meters away from him and members of his family. In spite of the risks that were posed to both him and his family, including reports of metal and gas around the crash site, Byron immediately jumped into action and reportedly helped save the pilot who was still in the seat of his rapidly sinking plane.

As you might expect Byron was quickly labeled a hero for risking his own life to save that of a stranger, but on Sunday night Byron took to social media to set the record straight regarding the rescue. Although Byron did admit that he had participated in the rescue effort, he wanted to make it clear that it was another man who had reached the pilot first, and therefore it was that man, a man named Serge Labelle, who should be praised as a hero rather than Byron himself.

Here is Byron's message unedited and in full:

I want everyone to know it was Serge Labelle who rescued the pilot and should be recognized for his heroic actions. My father-in-law, brother-
in-law, friend and I assisted in the rescue. As well as many incredible others on the shore. Serge is the Hero!

Thank you everyone for the kind messages. I want to wish the pilote all the best in his recovery!

It is yet another tremendously classy gesture from Byron who had previously declined to comment on the story at all out of respect for the pilot who was injured as well as his family. I suspect though that seeing media reports in which he was being praised as the rescuer instead of Labelle are what motivated him to speak out and set the record straight in spite of his earlier reservations.

If you haven't seen them already, here are some of the photos from the aftermath of the crash:
