Penguins acquire Mikael Granlund after making room for the major move!

The Pittsburgh Penguins were moving pieces around on Wednesday and it was all in order to land Mikael Granlund from the Nashville Predators in exchange for a 2023 second-round draft pick.

The Penguins confirmed the trade moments later: 

Earlier on Wednesday, the Penguins traded forward Teddy Blueger to the Vegas Golden Knights in return for for a third round pick in 2024 and defenseman Peter DiLiberatore.

They also re-assigned defenseman Mark Friedman and forward Brock McGinn to their AHL affiliate, creating an extra $1.9M in cap space, giving Pittsburgh over $6M in space now. Granlund is currently in the second year of a four-year, $20 million contract he signed in 2021 that carries an AAV of $5 million.

Granlund has recorded nine goals and 27 assists in 36 games this season. In 729 career games with the Predators and Minnesota Wild, Granlund has a total of 144 goals and 335 assists. He was originally selected ninth overall by Minnesota in the 2010 NHL Draft.
