Things get nasty between Penguins and Flyers fans during Game 1.
The rivalry between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers is a fierce one and unfortunately sometimes the animosity between fans on opposing sides can go a little too far.
That was unfortunately the case during what was a hotly contested Game 1 between the Flyers and Penguins in their opening round Stanley Cup playoff series on Saturday, with multiple fights breaking out in the crowd at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh.
In fact 93.7 The Fan's Andrew Fillipponi initially reported that there had been two separate fights in the crowd prior to Game 1 even getting underway, which led to a total of 5 fans being escorted out of the building for their roles in those altercations. Fillipponi would later report that there had also been a brawl in the parking lot, although did not share details regarding the number of people involved in that altercation.
Although these are regrettable incidents that could paint fans from both fan bases in a negative light there were plenty of interactions between rival fans that, while heated, never crossed the line into physical violence.
Hopefully this turns out to be a few bad apples and the rest of the series can be free of these types of incidents. Although given the intense rivalry and history between these two teams and their fan bases, that may be wishful thinking.
