NHL veteran hits a new low point in his career after being cut by the Penguins on Saturday.
The National Hockey League is only days away from getting the 2025-26 regular season under way and as a result teams are now making some of the final adjustments to their training camp rosters as they gear up for the season ahead.
On Saturday, the Pittsburgh Penguins made a big round of cuts when they chopped 10 names off of their training camp roster including that of a well established NHL veteran.
The Penguins sent 4 of those players down to the American Hockey League where they will participate in training camp for their AHL affiliate, the Wilkes/Barre-Scranton Penguins, with those players being Triston Broz, Avery Hayes, Sergei Murashov and Owen Pickering.
Murashov and Hayes both looked good in training camp and the preseason with the Penguins and I do wonder if they may have enjoyed a better fate if the Penguins weren't headed for what looks like a deliberate attempt to tank this season. Given the fact that the team does appear to be tanking the season, it does make sense to keep them down in the AHL and bring them up when the Penguins are building towards the future.
The Penguins will also be sending a number of players to the waiver wire where they will be eligible to be claimed by rival teams. Those players are expected to be placed on waivers a little later today, with the players in question being Alexander Alexeyev, Ryan Graves, Rafael Harvey-Pinard, Boko Imama and Sam Poulin.
Perhaps the biggest news of this announcement however is the fact that veteran NHL forward Robby Fabbri was released from a professional tryout offer with the Penguins. Fabbri, once an extremely promising young forward in the NHL, has had his career derailed by injuries and this may very well be a new low point in his NHL career. Only time will tell if he can land a contract somewhere else for this season.
