On Monday, the Penguins placed 23 year old forward Jonathan Gruden on waivers for the purpose of assignment to the AHL. Gruden will now have to clear the waiver process before he can be assigned to the AHL, which means any rival team in the league can submit a claim for him and pick him up.
Playoff teams already have their rosters locked in so that very likely eliminates half the league when it comes to the possibility of a waiver claim, but non-playoff teams could still look to add some depth to their rosters as they close out the regular season.
Gruden, a 4th round pick (95th overall) of the Ottawa Senators at the 2018 NHL Entry Draft, has appeared in 11 NHL games for the Penguins this season and has 1 goal and no assists to his name.
Gruden has spent most of the season in the AHL with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, there he has 13 goals and 10 assists for a total of 23 points over 41 games at the AHL level.
