The Pittsburgh Penguins are believed to be one of the front-runners in the Erik Karlsson sweepstakes, though the asking price out of San Jose remains quite steep for president of hockey operations Kyle Dubas.

A recent report from Frank Seravalli revealed how a trade for the Norris Trophy winner might only come later this offseason.

If ever the Penguins cannot get the Karlsson trade done, there is a feeling that there is already a Plan B in place with Dan Kingerski of Pittsburgh Hockey Now reporting that the Penguins could have their eyes on defenseman Matt Grzelcyk.

“Sources indicated one name to keep an eye on is Boston Bruins defenseman Matt Grzelcyk, a left-handed puck-mover with a high hockey IQ and quick skates who makes good breakout passes but is only 5-foot-9.

“Grzelcyk, 29, has one year left on a four-year deal with a $3.687 million salary cap hit. Last season, he had 26 points (4-22-26) in 75 games. He was also a plus-46.”

Grzelcyk could sure fit within the Penguins’ DNA and might be a great target to focus on if ever Karlsson cannot come to Pittsburgh.
