The Pittsburgh Penguins are in the market for a bottom six centerman, and according to multiple sources, they've placed a target on a particular player that should make fans pretty happy.

Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported on the extremely close relationship former fan favorite Matt Cullen has with general manager Jim Rutherford - leveraging that fact and the Pens' need for a reliable depth centerman to call for Cullen's return to Pittsburgh.

Cullen said earlier this year that “there’s nobody I respect in the game of hockey more than Jim [Rutherford]. I owe a lot to him for everything he’s given me,” as reported by Mackey.

This gets more interesting when Bob McKenzie and Michael Russo step into the conversation, with some concrete evidence rather than simply conjecture.

Cullen was made a healthy scratch for the Minnesota Wild on Friday night, and it let to some speculation.

Russo, of The Athletic, is a top reporter for the Wild, and points to some real evidence that Rutherford would be interested in bringing Cullen back. They would already know what they're getting in him, and he'd be an important piece of the puzzle when the playoffs roll around.
