The Pittsburgh Penguins are trading defenseman Chad Ruhwedel to the New York Rangers. In return, they get a 2027 fourth-round pick, per Chris Johnston.
The Penguins confirmed the transaction minutes later:
Ruhwedel is a pending unrestricted free agent that was expected to be moved by the Penguins by the deadline. He has taken part in 47 games this season with Pittsburgh, posting one goal, four points, and a minus-4 rating.
He has an easily affordable $800,000 cap hit, which probably caught the attention of New York, where he will be a decent addition to their bottom pairing and an option for their penalty kill.
Before his stop in Pittsburgh, Ruhwedel spent his first four seasons in the NHL with the Buffalo Sabres. This is somewhat a return to New York, with a shot at a championship.
Last night, the Penguins made a move with another Metropolitan Division rival, sending star forward Jake Guentzel to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for forward Michael Bunting , prospects Ville Koivunen , Vasili Ponomarev and Cruz Lucius and conditional first- and fifth-round picks in this summer’s draft. The first-rounder becomes Philadelphia’s second-rounder if the Hurricanes don’t reach the final, and Pittsburgh only gets the fifth if Carolina wins it all for the second time in franchise history.
