The trade market buzzing around the Penguins and the Red Wings.
Could we be coming closer to Erik Karlsson moving once again? According to multiple reports, trade chatter is heating up around the Pittsburgh Penguins and Detroit Red Wings, with a deal possibly taking shape sooner rather than later.
Penguins insider Josh Yohe of The Athletic recently told the Kevin Karius Show: “I wouldn’t be shocked if you hear his name pop up sooner rather than later; Detroit’s the team I’ve heard the most.”
A lot of hurdles still stand in the way of a blockbuster. Karlsson carries a $10 million cap hit for each of the next two seasons, and he owns a full no-move clause. The star defenseman, however, is reportedly willing to waive that clause for the right fit, preferably a contender. After missing the playoffs in six straight seasons, including his last two in Pittsburgh, it’s no surprise that Karlsson might be eager for a fresh start elsewhere.
The “sweet spot,” insiders suggest, would be a Penguins deal that retains salary and drops Karlsson’s cap hit to around $7.5 million. Whether that’s enough to entice Detroit or another team remains to be seen, but the Red Wings have been the club mentioned most often in recent trade circles.
Karlsson’s trade value is tricky. On one hand, he’s a three-time Norris Trophy winner (2012, 2015 with the Ottawa Senators; 2023 with the San Jose Sharks) and remains capable of putting up points. At the recent 4 Nations Face-Off, Karlsson reminded everyone of his talent, collecting three points in three games for Team Sweden while averaging over 18 minutes a night. On the other hand, his age, contract, and injury history make him a gamble for any NHL team out there.
For Pittsburgh, moving Karlsson would free up cap space and signal a shift in direction. For Detroit, adding him could be the push they need to make serious noise in the Eastern Conference.
The question now: are the Red Wings seriously considering pulling the trigger on a monster Karlsson trade?
