Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic was dealt some unfortunate news, as he's been placed on long-term injured reserve after having suffered a lower body injury earlier this week against the Dallas Stars.
Because he is now on long-term injured reserve, Nedeljkovic will be missing a minimum of 10 games and won't be eligible to return until Pittsburgh's November 19 matchup against the defending Stanley Cup champion Vegas Golden Knights.
Nedeljkovic, who has played in two regular season games since joining the Penguins, was able to make it through the entire game against Dallas but noticed that something was wrong the following morning in practice.
“It was bothering him to the point where we’ve got to take further action, just with his evaluation process,” head coach Mike Sullivan said.
In response, the Penguins have called up goaltender Magnus Hellberg from their AHL affiliate Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins. Like Nedeljkovic, Hellberg spent last season playing with the Detroit Red Wings (along with brief tenures with the Seattle Kraken and Ottawa Senators).
“I think it's important for us as an organization to try to sustain a certain level of success,” Sullivan said. “To have players that have some NHL experience, that have proven capabilities at this level, I think, just makes us that much deeper in the event that we go to these guys and they get the nod to play.”
The Penguins will be taking on the Colorado Avalanche tonight at PPG Paints Arena. Tristan Jarry will be getting the nod between the pipes as Pittsburgh attempts to improve their pedestrian 2-4 record.
