The Pittsburgh Penguins have just confirmed some pretty terrible news, but strangely enough the timing of this bad news actually makes it seem like a good thing for the Penguins.

On Saturday, the Penguins announced through their department of public relations that veteran defenseman Kris Letang would miss significant time due to injury. After the Penguins confirmed that Letang would be headed to injured reserve, it was confirmed that the reason for his absence was a fractured foot with an expected recovery time of about 4 weeks.

Now you might be asking yourself, how in the world is that good news? Well it's not, but you would be hard pressed to argue that the timing could have worked out any better for the Penguins.

For the first time in over 10 years the National Hockey League will be allowing it's players to return to the Winter Olympic Games which in turn means that the league is scheduled for a large break next month. As a result of the extended Olympic break for every team in the NHL Letang will only miss a grand total of 6 games, assuming he returns within the 4 week timeline, a huge break for the Penguins.

Letang has been having a solid season with 3 goals and 22 assists for 25 points in 50 games played, and the hope is that this latest injury won't derail the 38 year old blue liner.

That being said, if Letang was going to suffer a significant injury of this nature during the course of the season it could not have come at a better time for the Penguins.
