After recent rumblings linking him to Edmonton, sources suggest DeBoer’s next move could be somewhere entirely different.
Peter DeBoer’s name is once again circulating in NHL coaching circles, this time with another Western Conference contender, according to Cam Robinson. While nothing is finalized, Robinson reports that advanced discussions with the Los Angeles Kings have taken place. He adds that DeBoer is “quite happy at the moment,” suggesting any deal would need to be substantial for him to make a move, as he focuses on Team Canada as one of the assistant coaches for the 2026 Olympics in Milan.
DeBoer’s recent history includes a dramatic and controversial exit from Dallas, where he was fired following a storm of criticism over pulling goalie Jake Oettinger early in Game 5 of last year’s Western Conference Final against the Edmonton Oilers, a moment still hotly debated among Stars fans.
Despite that controversy, DeBoer’s record speaks volumes. In three seasons with Dallas, he posted a 149-68-29 record, boasting the best points percentage in the NHL (.665) over that span. His playoff performance wasn’t far behind: the Stars went 29-27, trailing only Edmonton and Florida in total postseason wins during those years.
Across his career, DeBoer has coached more than 1,200 regular-season games with the Florida Panthers, New Jersey Devils, San Jose Sharks, Vegas Golden Knights, and Stars, compiling 662 wins and nearly 100 postseason victories. Few available coaches bring that level of experience.
Interestingly, just last week, his name surfaced in a rumour linking him to the Oilers, potentially as a replacement for Kris Knoblauch.
Whether it’s Los Angeles, Edmonton, or elsewhere, one thing is clear: DeBoer remains one of the most experienced and coveted coaches in the NHL.
Later on Friday, insider Pierre LeBrun investigated on the possibility of a coaching change in Los Angeles and was told by general manager Ken Holland that there was no truth to Robinson’s report.
I guess time will tell…
