In case you missed it, midway through the first period of last night’s game between the Los Angeles Kings and Edmonton Oilers, Kings defenseman Dion Phaneuf laid and old school, open-ice hit on Oilers forward Milan Lucic.

As Lucic was cutting through the neutral zone he attempted to make a move on Phaneuf to the wing but Phaneuf stepped up like he has dozens of other times throughout his NHL career and absolutely trucked Lucic. The two big men came together hard, but it was Lucic who was sent sprawling to the ice.

Kaboom! That’s a classic Dion hit!

As for Lucic… when was the last time you saw him throw a hit like this? At one point in time these two players were the most feared hitters in all of hockey. Now? Not so much.

Here’s hoping that this sparks a fire under both players and motivates them to get back to their violent ways moving forward.
