Unfortunately for every hockey fan out there, veteran forward Phil Kessel remains unsigned and in November, there were reports that Kessel is considering the possibility of playing some games in the Swiss league. However, there remains hope that Kessel could sign with an NHL team as Pierre LeBrun reported on last night’s edition of Insider Trading on TSN that some teams are in contact with the free agent and seeing how Zach Parise has made a return to the league with the Colorado Avalanche and how Corey Perry got a second chance with the Edmonton Oilers, there could be something to be worked out with Kessel as well:
“I’ve checked in on that over the last day and the answer is that he still absolutely hopes to catch on with an NHL team. He has not given up hope. His camp is still in contact with a couple of teams. One of the things in consideration here is that, because he hasn’t played since last year, is that there might be a team or two that says “Hey come and skate with us for a bit so we can take a look at you and see where things are.”
“He’s been skating and trying to stay ready. After Zach Parise and Corey Perry found homes, could it be a hat trick with Phil Kessel finding a home before March 8? We’ll see.”
Kessel, who played in all 82 games with the Golden Knights last season, put up 14 goals and 22 assists. He only played four games in the playoffs and the Knights went on to capture their first Stanley Cup in franchise history, making it Kessel’s third championship in his career. He has one more run in him!
Selected fifth overall by the Boston Bruins in 2006, Kessel has played for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Pittsburgh Penguins, Arizona Coyotes and Golden Knights, recording 413 goals and 579 assists over 1,286 games.
There is still time. Get Phil the Thrill under contract!
