Earlier on Wednesday, the Ottawa Senators were informed by the NHL that they will have to forfeit a first-round pick as a result of punishment stemming from their 2021 trade that sent Evgenii Dadonov to the Vegas Golden Knights and subsequent, invalidated trade that would have sent the forward to the Anaheim Ducks in March 2022.

Now according to Frank Seravalli, the Senators have decided to fire general manager Pierre Dorion.

Dorion was held accountable for what tranpired last season. This started off when the Senators traded Dadonov to Vegas in return for defenseman Nick Holden and a third-round pick back in July 2021. Ottawa failed to inform the Golden Knight that Dadonov had a 10-team no-trade clause, which caused trouble at the 2022 trade deadline, and therefore the Senators are dealing with the consequences.

Ahead of the 2022 trade deadline, the Golden Knights traded Dadonov and a second-round pick to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for defenseman John Moore and Ryan Kesler’s contract. The deal was however cancelled by the NHL two days later because the Ducks were one of the teams on Dadonov’s no-trade list and the trade could not be finalized.

The first-round pick loss was the last straw... The Senators are scheduled to hold a press conference later on Wednesday following reports of Dorion's firing.

This whole situation was added to an already mess in which the Sens complicated their cap space on their own that led to restricted free agent forward Shane Pinto remaining unsigned into the season. Last week, Pinto was subsequently suspended 41 games sports betting activity.

Newly installed Senators president of hockey operations Steve Staios has been around, with new owner Michael Andlauer, for just a few weeks and are already dealing with important changes in Ottawa.

Dorion had been the general manager in Ottawa for the past eight seasons when, on April 10, 2016, Bryan Murray announced that he would be stepping down as the Senators’ general manager and that Dorion would succeed him. He was the seventh-longest tenured GM in the league at the time of his dismissal.
