On Wednesday morning, Hockey Canada announced its management group for Canada’s Men’s Olympic Team at the 2022 Beijing Olympic Winter Games, if NHL players are able to participate. St. Louis Blues GM Doug Armstrong has been named general manager, leading a group that includes Edmonton Oilers GM Ken Holland, Seattle Kraken GM Ron Francis, Boston Bruins GM Don Sweeney, Florida Panthers executive Roberto Luongo and Senior VP of national teams Scott Salmond.
This is very exciting to think about the approaching competition and it prompted many insiders, including TSN’s Pierre LeBrun, to predict what the Team Canada roster would look like for the 2022 Winter Games.
Looking at his predictions on which star players will complete the Canadian roster, it feels like there is no way Team Canada does not come out on top and win the goal medal.
I mean, come on, check this roster out:
As you can notice, there are some shocking omissions. Here are some forwards who didn't make the cut: Jonathan Toews (Blackhawks), Taylor Hall (Sabers), Claude Giroux (Flyers), Logan Couture (Sharks), Sean Couturier (Flyers), Tyler Seguin (Stars) , Pierre-Luc Dubois (Jets), Jonathan Huberdeau (Panthers) and Brendan Gallagher (Canadians). This is how LeBrun explains it in his latest piece from The Athletic:
“I feel sick to my stomach leaving off the likes of Jonathan Toews, Taylor Hall, Claude Giroux, Logan Couture, Sean Couturier, Tyler Seguin, Pierre-Luc Dubois, Jonathan Huberdeau and Brendan Gallagher.”
Here are some defensemen who didn't make the cut: Shea Weber (Canadiens), Brent Burns (Sharks), Kris Letang (Penguins), Mark Giordano (Flames), Colton Parayko (Blues) and Darnell Nurse (Oilers). Again, LeBrun says:
“Again, I feel nauseous thinking that I’ve left off Shea Weber, Brent Burns, Kris Letang, Mark Giordano, Colton Parayko and Darnell Nurse, among others. I really wanted to find a way to get the veteran Weber on there because he remains a top blueliner, and while the North American sized ice surface in Beijing would be in his favour, I think we still have a change of the guard here.”
Do you agree with this lineup? What change would you make if you were GM or head coach?
