It was rare good night for the Chicago Blackhawks and their fanbase on Wednesday night. The Hawks finally got to celebrate a win as Captain Jonathan Toews collected a goal and two assists, and Chicago stopped an eight-game losing streak with a 6-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins.
It would have been fair to leave the star player alone, happy to celebrate a win, but you know Pierre McGuire was not going to allow it as he choose to sit down with the captain following the win for a short post-game interview.
That's where things got awkward fast. As you can see in the short videos below that quickly went viral on social media, McGuire kicks off the interview but introducing Toews as if no one in the building knew who the hell he was. When fans react and cheer on the captain, who became the 16th active player to reach 700 career points with the same franchise and assisted on Brandon Saad's empty-netter for his 701st point, McGuire had the most awkward reaction - and felt the need to tell poor Toews.
"They still love you," he says to Toews following the crowd's cheers.
You can see the awkward segment here below, as posted by people on Twitter and Streamable:
Toews had no other choice but to make a short comment, saying 'That's good' to McGuire's stupid statement.
At least, Captain Serious had a chance to answer more suitable questions following his team's win and appeared relieved that Chicago could get back on a winning streak following this important win over the Penguins.
"It's a relief, but it's definitely just a good feeling," Toews said to reporters post-game in the dressing room away from McGuire. "The guys have something to celebrate, something to enjoy. It's something we've got to be aware of and build off."
The Hawks are 4-12-2 under Jeremy Colliton, who replaced Joel Quenneville back on Nov. 6. Chicago opened the scoring for the first time since Nov. 18 and led 2-1 after one period. Opponents had scored first in the Hawks' last 11 games, outscoring them 25-5 in the first period during that span.
It's a good thing the Hawks can start anew following last night's game: however, McGuire isn't able to do the same with this most awkward interview with Jonathan Toews...
