The Pittsburgh Penguins have fired head coach Mike Johnston along with assistant coach Gary Agnew.
Johnston was hired at the beginning of the 2014-2015 season and led the Penguins to a 43-27-12 record, but couldn't make it past the first round of the playoffs.
This year, Pittsburgh was tied for the eight spot in the Eastern conference with a 15-10-3 through 28 games.
General manager Jim Rutherford had named Mike Sullivan as the new head coach. He was coaching the team's AHL affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins and had a 18-5 record so far. Sullivan was the head coach of the Boston Bruins from 2003 to 2006 and was assistant coach for the Vancouver Canucks, the New York Rangers and the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Former NHL head coach, Jacques Martin, who was hired at the beginning of the season as a special assistant will join Sullivan behind the bench.
