PK Subban returns to Montreal to finish what he started
P.K. Subban has done it.
On Friday, the Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation announced that the former Montreal Canadiens defenseman has completed the frankly unbelievably generous pledge he made to their hospital when he was just 23 years of age. At that time Subban pledged a staggering charitable donation in the amount of $10 million, the largest such donation of its kind by any professional athlete in North America at that time.
Not only was it an incredibly generous pledge on the part of Subban but it was one that came with challenges he could have never expected. Subban made the pledge to the Montreal Children's Hospital on September 16th of 2015 and in a shocking turn of events the Montreal Canadiens would trade him to the Nashville Predators just 9 months later.
"It was difficult. Definitely had its difficulties." admitted Subban on Friday night as per The Montreal Gazette.
While the number $10 million is very impressive, what is even more impressive is the number of children that Subban helped as a result of his donation. According to the foundation, an estimated 100,000 children have been helped as a result of Subban's incredible generosity.
Subban says that, despite the challenges, he never had any doubt about his commitment to the children.
"Was there any doubt in my mind? No, because I made a commitment that I was always gonna follow through on," said Subban.
Subban did more than just bring his wallet to the table though, according to Renee Vezina, the president of the Montreal Children's Hospital Foundation, Subban's incredible gesture helped put their charity back into the mainstream conversation.
"It remains the largest pledge by an athlete to date," said Vezina. "But it’s much more than that, because when P.K. started to get involved, they kind of placed the Children’s back in people’s minds and in the heart of Quebecers."
It is important to note that Subban last played in the NHL during the 2021-22 NHL regular season and has long since retired from the sport, something else that added another layer of challenges when it came to raising the money. For those that doubted he would be able to do so, despite his commitment to continued fundraising efforts long after his playing career, Subban only has one message.
"For those doubters, I hope they believe in themselves. Don’t doubt other people, just find that courage to believe in yourself, and believe that the impossible is possible, and we just proved that."
And 100,000 children are grateful for it.
