This has no place in hockey!
According to a report on Instagram from Puck Empire, a player in the Liga Mexicana Elite de Hockey has been handed a year long suspension for an extremely dangerous slew foot on an opponent.
First up, here's the play in question:
And a break down of things from Puck Empire:
Santiago Sierra π²π½, one of the better players to ever come out of Mexico, has been suspended for one year after delivering a vicious slewfoot to an unsuspecting player without the puck (swipe to view video).
Sierra, 36, had five goals, six points through five games played with the Teotihuacan Priests this season, but his season is now of course over due to this hit.
Sierra has represented Mexico in 103 games at the international stage (men's and juniors) from 2003-2020. He also was an assistant coach for Mexico's U18 team at the 2019 WJC U18 D3A.
Outside of Mexico, he has played for the El Paso Rhinos (WSHL) πΊπΈ in 2006-07, and FranΓ§ais Volants Paris (France3) π«π· in 2015-16.
He delivered the slewfoot to Brandon Mendez π²π½, a 20-year old forward. Mendez had zero goals, two points through two games played with the Bradford Bulls (GMHL) π¨π¦ this season. He also had two goals, five points through four games played with the Olmec Stone Heads (Mexico) π²π½. He played for Mexico's national team at the D3A World Championship this year.
Mendez was left unconscious for minutes following the slewfoot.
I played in the Mexican league earlier this month, very solid league full of some very talented players, and also quite physical. Sucks to see something like this happen.
