A lot of fans were upset this past weekend after Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson leveled Vancouver Canucks forward Filip Chytil with a thunderous body check in the neutral zone. At least part of the outrage I believe stemmed from how the situation was handled by the National Hockey League's officials on the ice as well as how it was handle by those calling the game from the broadcast booth.

The hit would come late in the first period, after the Canucks had taken a commanding 3-0 lead, with Wilson closing in on Chytil after he had released a dump in down the ice. Chytil was looking at the puck and never saw Wilson coming, leaving him in a bad way after he ran into what was effectively a brick wall.

Here's a look at the hit itself:

The reaction from the broadcast booth was to express disgust at another dirty hit from Wilson while the officials on the ice initially called a major penalty, likely as a result of seeing Chytil doubled over on the ice. Upon further review however the major penalty was not only rescinded, but the officials determined that no penalty at all would be assessed to Wilson for the hit.

It would now seem that the NHL's Department of Player Safety agrees with the assessment from the officials who made the call on the ice, with NHL insider Elliotte Friedman revealing that the league has determined there will be no supplemental discipline for Wilson as a result of this hit.

A frustrating development for fans of the Vancouver Canucks to be sure, especially given what Chytil represents for their team. Chytil was the centerpiece of the return they received when they traded away star forward J.T. Miller, who has since been named captain of the Rangers, with major concerns about the trade at the time it was made due to Chytil's long and documented history of concussion issues.

Chytil was limited to just 15 games last season due to injury, less than half of the games Miller played for the Rangers following the trade, and he has now been injured again just 6 games into the regular season and things didn't look good following what the NHL has determined was a clean hit from Wilson.
