It's been a while since the NHL has seen a old timey brawl, and boy this one did not disappoint.

During Monday night's matchup between the Tampa Bay Lightning and Ottawa Senators, an ugly looking check resulted in both teams trying to absolutely body each other.

With the Bolts leading the Sens by a score of 5-1, and less than ten minutes remaining in the third period, Lightning' forward Cedric Paquette attempted to nail Senators' forward Tommy Wingels with an open-ice hit. Paquette's timing is slightly off and he winds up side-swiping Wingels, sending him to the ice in a heap.

While the hit definitely didn't connect as planned, Wingels remained on the ice in obvious pain.

And then all hell broke loose.

Both teams start to tussle violently, with players starting to fight in front of the Tampa bench. Sens' forward Mike Blunden goes after Paquette and gives him the takedown of his life, while Chris Wideman takes on Gabriel Dumont in a revenge bout.

Even the referees are powerless to stop the carnage and elect to let the two teams settle the score. They even point at the scene instead of interjecting, deciding on how to approach the violence.

This was a scene reminiscent of old time hockey:
