It would appear as though at least one National Hockey League career has reached the end of the line today.

According to a report from NHL insider Chris Johnston, the Ottawa Senators have now placed veteran forward Pontus Aberg on waivers. These are not normal waivers but instead unconditional waivers and the move has been made with the express purpose of terminating Aberg's contract with the organization.

This represents a low point in Aberg's lengthy NHL career and it may be an indication that he has finally run out of chances in this league. Aberg was drafted in the 2nd round (37th overall) of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft by the Nashville Predators and was once a promising prospect, but it seems he could never quite figure it out at the NHL level.

Aberg would go on to play 3 seasons with the Predators but it wouldn't be long before they jettisoned him out the back. Aberg would then bounce from team to team around the National Hockey League, playing for the Edmonton Oilers, Anaheim Ducks, Minnesota Wild and Toronto Maple Leafs. In spite of numerous opportunities with a number of different teams around the league, Aberg could simply never find a consistent role for himself on any of the NHL rosters he was on.

Perhaps his best stretch of play came with the Ducks, who gave him 37 games in a single season tied for the most in his NHL career, and he had 11 goals and 8 assists for 19 points over that stretch. In spite of his offensive production for the Ducks however he finished with a plus minus rating of -10 and the Ducks opted not to bring him back at the end of the season.

His most recent experience in the NHL came during a 5 game stint as a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs where he picked up a single assist.

Following his departure from the Leafs, Aberg signed a deal in the KHL only to make an unsuccessful bid at an NHL return this season. In the end he got just 17 games with the American Hockey League's Belleville Senators, recording 2 goals and 9 assists for 11 total points and a plus minus rating of -3.
