Potential Jake Guentzel trade could take a stunning turn

This would be nuts.

He's one of the top trade targets that is expected to find a new home by Friday afternoon, but could a potential deal extend into a third team?

Pittsburgh Penguins forward Jake Guentzel is in the final year of his current contract and is expected to be offloaded by general manager Kyle Dubas in what will be likely the first step of what is going to be a difficult rebuilding process. Guentzel has been linked to a handful of teams, including the Vancouver Canucks and Vegas Golden Knights. But if he were to be sent to the Canucks, would they get a third team involved?

According to Insider Chris Johnston of The Athletic and TSN, a potential deal involving Guentzel being shipped to the Canucks could result in Vancouver sending forward Elias Lindholm, whom they just acquired earlier this season from the rival Calgary Flames, to the Boston Bruins as part of a 3-way trade.

He writes:

"With the Canucks believed to be among those pursuing Jake Guentzel, word is they've had discussions about potentially flipping Elias Lindholm to the #bruins as part of the machinations to make it happen.

Nothing concrete in place at this time. Still lots of moving parts."

Lindholm has been a member of the Canucks for just over a month now after he was acquired from Calgary in exchange for forward Andrei Kuzmenko, prospects Hunter Brzustewicz and Joni Jurmo, and first-round and conditional fourth-round picks in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft. It wouldn't be long for him to etch himself into the team record books, tying the mark for most game-winning goals by a newly acquired player in six games.

Like Guentzel, Lindholm is playing in the final year of his current contract.
