Predators trade Luke Evangelista for two draft picks

It has been a painfully quiet stretch on the NHL trade front since free agency opened on July 1st, with fans and media alike refreshing their feeds hoping for something, anything, to break the monotony. Well, on Tuesday night, the silence was finally shattered in a move that caught more than a few people off guard. The Nashville Predators have shipped out one of their promising young forwards, and the New Jersey Devils are the beneficiaries.

The Deal and Its Details

Nashville has sent 24-year-old winger Luke Evangelista to New Jersey in exchange for a conditional 2028 first-round pick, originally belonging to the Colorado Avalanche, along with the Devils' own 2028 second-round selection. Both clubs officially confirmed the transaction on Tuesday evening.

The conditions on that first-rounder are worth paying attention to. If either Colorado's 2027 first-round pick does not end up being transferred to Toronto, or if the Avalanche's 2028 first-rounder lands in the top 10, then Nashville will instead receive Colorado's 2029 first-round pick. So essentially, the pick carries top-10 protection, which gives Nashville some insurance but also means they could be waiting a while to cash in.

Evangelista is entering the last year of a two-year deal that carries a $3 million cap hit. He just came off the best season of his career, putting up 56 points in 81 games with Nashville, including a career-best 44 assists. The former second-round selection from the 2020 draft has compiled 143 points across 259 regular-season and playoff contests during his four years in the Predators organization.

What This Means for Both Teams

Predators GM Chris MacFarland acknowledged that this was not an easy call, noting that Evangelista had become a fan favorite in Nashville. However, MacFarland emphasized that the move was about creating flexibility from both a roster and salary cap perspective. He also pointed to the young wingers already in the organization who will now have a clearer path to earning NHL roster spots.

On the Devils' side, this is the latest in a string of moves by first-time general manager Sunny Mehta, who has been busy reshaping New Jersey's forward group this offseason. Evangelista joins a list of additions that includes Anthony Mantha, Evan Rodrigues, Jesper Boqvist, and Amadeus Lombardi as part of what has been a significant overhaul up front.

For the Devils, adding a 24-year-old who just posted 56 points at a manageable $3 million cap number feels like a smart bet, especially with only one year left on his contract. If Evangelista continues to develop, New Jersey could have a legitimate top-six contributor on their hands. For Nashville, the draft capital and cap room give them ammunition to continue retooling.
