Proposed trade would send Patrick Kane to the Boston Bruins.
NHL writer throws out his trade idea.
There's little doubt that one of the most talked about stories this season will be the future of Chicago Blackhawks superstar forward Patrick Kane. Although Kane is still currently a member of the Blackhawks organization, many believe it to be a forgone conclusion that Kane will depart the team before the National Hockey League's trade deadline in March of 2023, but of course the question on everyone's mind is what team will he play for next?
Recently, Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe proposed a trade scenario in which the Boston Bruins could potentially add Patrick Kane to their roster and perhaps the most interesting detail about his proposal was the fact that it would not involve a third team.
The two main pieces suggested as a return by Dupont are veteran forward Jake DeBrusk and veteran defenseman Brandon Carlo. While DeBrusk is still relatively young, he only has 2 years remaining on his current deal and will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of that deal. That gives the Blackhawks relatively little control during a rebuilding process, and I'm not necessarily convinced that they would be interested in DeBrusk. That being said, his average annual value (AAV) of $4 million going back the other way is a key component of Dupont's proposal.
Carlo on the other hand might be a far more enticing option given his lengthy contract and the control that comes with that. Carlo has a similar cap hit at an AAV of $4.1 million per season, but has 5 years remaining on his current deal before he comes a UFA. Having a relatively affordable, quality defenseman on your roster during a rebuild certainly isn't the worst thing in the world.
The last inclusion from Dupont in this deal, as far as the cap hit is concerned, is Bruins veteran Craig Smith. Dupont admits that this would be far more interesting from the Bruins perspective, but Smith's cap hit of $3 million would help even out the money going both ways.
Last but not least, Dupont believes that the Bruins would have to give up one of their top prospects in Jakub Zboril or Jack Studnicka to make this deal work, meaning this would be a 4 for 1 trade between the Bruins and the Blackhawks.
