Prospect Berggren assigned to AHL Grand Rapids, but drives to the wrong city!
The Red Wings prospect was in for a shock when he rolled into town!

Detroit Red Wings prospect Jonatan Berggren was a late cut from the team's training camp and accepted his assignment to the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins... but there's just one problem.
The Griffins, of course, play in Grand Rapids, Michigan... but unfortunately for Berggren he set his GPS for Grand Rapids, Ohio and made the short 90 minute drive just south of Toledo, Ohio to Grand Rapids, Ohio. Of course, he was supposed to travel about 3 hours west to Grand Rapids, Michigan to report to Griffins camp.
The Red Wings organization is taking the mix up in stride though and have essentially laughed it off. Berggren and his girlfriend packed up their stuff and made it safely to the "correct" Grand Rapids later that same day.
Here's Berrgren's take on things courtesy of Swedish hockey publisher Aftonbladet (translated from Swedish):
She told me to enter the arena’s address on the GPS, but I could not find it. We only enter Grand Rapids so we can apply for it when we arrive, I said. It said Grand Rapids OH, and I had never heard it before. But wow, there’s probably only one Grand Rapids in the US, I thought. It was also two hours from Detroit, and they had told me it would take about that long.
- Jonatan BerggrenSo it felt damn nice when there were only 20 minutes left, but still odd in some way. I’ve read about Grand Rapids and it’s supposed to be pretty big. But this looks like a village, when will the city come !? Once we entered Grand Rapids we were met by farmers as well. We checked it out and there are only seven hundred people living in that small cave.
Maybe I'm being cruel, but that's absolutely hilarious to me.
In the end, all's well that ends well and Berrgren made it to Grand Rapids in time to practice with the team this week and prepare for the team's season opener on Friday night. Here's hoping that when he gets called up to the Red Wings this season though that he doesn't head south to Detroit, Alabama... population 232.
