Longtme QMJHL commissioner Gilles Courteau abruptly announced his resignation yesterday, ending 37 years as the league's top executive.
Gilles posted a lengthy statement on social media (in French) essentially stating that the time has come for him to pass the torch and that he would be resigning from the league immediately.
It's worth noting that Courteau was in the middle of what Global News calls a "political firestorm" after testifying at legislature regarding hazing rituals in junior hockey. The now former commissioner testified that the QMJHL has no history of sexual abuse allegations within its ranks, an assertion that an unnamed former player protested in court.
Needless to say, this situation looks like it's about to get ugly and it appears that Courteau got out while the gettin's still good.
More to come on this developing story.
