Hughes brothers defend Auston Matthews after their Gold Medal win.
There may be a very interesting narrative forming around Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews fresh off of his huge Gold Medal victory over Canada on Sunday at the 2026 Winter Olympic Games.
Following the big win for Team USA on Sunday, Matthews was asked a question about regarding how this win could impact his confidence moving forward in the National Hockey League. Matthews however bristled at the question, which in turn led to a series of fiery responses from brothers Quinn and Jack Hughes.
"I'm trying to live in the moment man. C'mon," said Matthews.
It was at this point that Quinn and Jack would interject themselves into the conversation, calling out the Toronto media for their coverage of Matthews.
"I think it doesn’t matter what anyone says now," said Jack. "Auston Matthews is a winner. Auston Matthews is an Olympic gold medalist."
Quinn expressed a sentiment much the same but specifically called out the media in his response.
"That’s what the media in Toronto should be saying now," said Quinn. "Auston Matthews led us to a championship."
Matthews seemed to endorse the sentiments expressed by his Team USA teammates when he said he had nothing more to add.
"I don’t have anything else to say," said Matthews.
Matthews appeared elated after his Gold Medal victory on Sunday and was very emotional when speaking with the media about the big win after the fact. I don't blame him one bit for wanting to relish in the moment, especially given the criticism he has faced for his inability to win when it matters most throughout his career in the NHL.
