Someone took their frustration over the Milano Cortina Olympics out in the worst way imaginable. Outside the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto on Wednesday morning, a Quinn Hughes Vancouver Canucks jersey was discovered defaced with profanity-laced insults aimed at the 26-year-old Olympic gold medalist.

I guess some Canadians are sore losers…

Hughes, along with Team USA, helped secure the nation’s first men’s hockey gold since the “Miracle on Ice” in 1980, clinched in a tense three-on-three overtime victory over Canada. While most fans celebrated the historic achievement, some apparently took the loss personally.

The controversy around Team USA didn’t end on the ice. Following their victory, players received a congratulatory call from President Donald Trump in the locker room and an invitation to the White House. Comments made about the U.S. women’s hockey team during the call, which drew audible laughter, sparked criticism, and the incident continues to feed social media debate. Several players have since apologized and admitted they should have reacted differently.

Unfortunately, Hughes’ jersey became a target for some of that misplaced anger. Fans, pundits, and fellow athletes have condemned the act as crossing a line, stressing that celebrating achievements should never include harassment or personal attacks.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of how heated fandom can turn toxic when national pride, historic wins, and social media collide… and I guess it’s now a good thing Hughes plays south of the border, in Minnesota.

And it is not stopping him from keeping a media tour of some sorts... He is appear on the Tonight Show and “Saturday Night Live.” Connor Storrie, known for his role as a hockey player on the Canadian sports romance “Heated Rivalry,” will host the episode.
