Quinn Hughes finally breaks silence on ongoing contract stalemate as doubts emerge

With training camp just days away in Minnesota, all eyes have been on Quinn Hughes and the contract extension that has yet to materialize. But when the star defenseman finally spoke publicly on Wednesday, he delivered a message of calm that cut against the swirling speculation.

According to Mark Lazerus, Hughes said at the NHL Media Tour in Vegas on Wednesday that he does not "feel backed up against the wall where I have to sign before camp." He also dismissed concerns about the situation becoming a distraction once the regular season begins.

"I really do like it here," Hughes said of Minnesota, adding that the organization has nothing it needs to prove to him.

Hughes explained that he deliberately stepped away from hockey matters over the summer following what he described as a demanding 2025-26 season. As a result, discussions with general manager Bill Guerin are reportedly still in their early stages.

The 26-year-old defenseman pointed to head coach John Hynes, Guerin, and his teammates as key reasons he wants to stay. He singled out Brock Faber in particular, calling those relationships "massive draws" for him.

Still, Hughes declined to get into the specifics of negotiations or confirm whether the length of the deal is the primary sticking point.

“This is going to be done whenever I feel like it needs to be done. I don’t feel backed up against a wall. I’m very thoughtful. I want to make sure I’m taking my time on everything and make sure I’m making a decision that is going to be good for everyone. That’s kind of where my head has been at. We haven’t had that many conversations just because of how I wanted my summer to go in terms of being fresh and resetting and enjoying and training and being around friends and family. As we get going here I’m sure it’ll heat up, but I don’t feel backed up against a wall where I have to sign before camp.”

That lack of clarity has fueled plenty of outside chatter. Insider Elliotte Friedman recently suggested on NHL Network that Hughes could command an AAV as high as $20 million. Friedman also floated the possibility that Hughes is not looking for a long-term commitment, perhaps eyeing a three-year extension that would align with brother Jack's contract expiration in New Jersey in 2030.

According to TSN's Chris Johnston, Hughes reportedly has not yet made up his mind about his future. Johnston indicated that the Wild have the resources to offer a massive deal, but the player himself must be willing to commit.

Other teams are reportedly monitoring the situation. Kevin Kurz of The Athletic suggested the Philadelphia Flyers should be watching closely, noting Hughes' strong relationship with Flyers head coach Rick Tocchet from their time together in Vancouver, as well as his friendship with Trevor Zegras.

Hughes is expected back in Minnesota on Thursday where Guerin planned to hold face-to-face discussions.

There is no indication that talks have broken down or that Hughes could end up on the trade block. But with camp opening and no deal in sight, the quiet confidence Hughes displayed may be tested as the season draws closer.
