HUGE trade, again on Friday.
Insider Elliotte Friedman has just broken the internet, announcing that Quinn Hughes has been traded to Minnesota in return for Marco Ross (2020 first-round pick), Zeev Buium (2024 first-round pick), Liam Ohgren (2022 first-round pick) and the Wild's unprotected 2026 first-round pick.
No retention in the trade on either side.
Here is the full trade details:
TO VAN: Zeev Buium
Marco Rossi
Liam Ohgren
1st round pick
TO MIN: Quinn Hughes
This is quite surprising seeing that, in recent days, the Wild had never really been in the conversation. Hughes had been linked to the Carolina Hurricanes, Detroit Red Wings, Washington Capitals and New Jersey Devils, where younger brothers Jack and Luke play.
Earlier in the weeks leading to this huge transaction, it had been pointed out how the Canucks were asking for a sky high return price for their captain. The trade taking place on Friday by Minnesota confirms it.
Hughes, signed through the 2026-27 season with a $7.85-million cap hit and a no-trade clause, has lead the Canucks offensively. Through 26 games, he has tallied two goals and 23 points, tied for the team lead.
When it comes to re-signing him, the Wild will however have to wait until July 1st. There have been no assurances given to the Wild that Hughes will extend next summer.
"They'll be the only team who can sign him for 8 years with a front-loaded structure including unlimited signing bonuses, before the CBA rules change Sept. 15," explains insider Chris Johnston.
The Canucks are getting quite the package in the blockbuster. Rossi, 24, has four goals and 13 points in 17 games this season. Since being selected ninth overall by the Wild in the 2020 NHL Draft, Rossi has collected 49 goals and 114 points in 202 games. He signed a three-year, $15 million contract with Minnesota this past offseason after setting career high marks in goals (24) and points (60) in 2024-25.
As for Buium, who is 20 years old, he has taken part in 31 games in his first NHL season, amassing three goals and 14 points. The Wild selected him 12th overall back in 2024.
Ohgren, who is just a year older than Buium, has not recorded a point in 18 games with the Wild this season. He has played in 46 career NHL games since being drafted 19th overall in 2022, compiling three goals and four assists.
I guess the rebuild has officially begun in Vancouver.
