The Minnesota Wild are doing well, sitting second in the NHL with a 9-3-3 record and boasting one of the league’s most dominant defensemen; everything looks fine on the ice. But behind the scenes, the biggest question hanging over the franchise remains stubbornly unresolved.

Wild general manager Bill Guerin appeared on the Chad Hartman Show on WCCO Talk 830 in Minnesota on Wednesday and offered a remarkably candid take on the state of negotiations with star blue liner Quinn Hughes.

"There's nothing to talk about right now," Guerin said. "What am I going to do, say 'Please, please, please?'"

The quote captures the tension of a situation that has simmered since Minnesota acquired Hughes from the Vancouver Canucks back in December 2025. That blockbuster deal cost the Wild forwards Liam Ohgren and Marco Rossi, defenseman Zeev Buium, and a 2026 first-round pick.

The problem has always been the clock. Hughes is in the final season of his six-year, $47.1 million contract and will become an unrestricted free agent this summer. The 2024 Norris Trophy winner has yet to commit to a long-term extension.

Guerin's comments arrived just days after Hughes returned to Vancouver, where reporters pressed him about his future. Hughes maintained that his focus is entirely on the present, adding that he believes Minnesota has a legitimate shot at winning it all this season.

As for what happens if no deal materializes before the March 1 trade deadline, Guerin admitted he simply does not have an answer yet.

"I haven't really decided. At some point in time I'll have to try to figure things out and see what's best for the team," Guerin said. "I know one thing's for sure: having Quinn on our team is what's best for the team."

He went further, acknowledging the uncertainty in unusually frank terms.

"I'll be completely honest with you, I don't know. I don't know what's going to happen. I don't know what I'm going to do. There's no date," Guerin said. He also pushed back on outside narratives, suggesting the media is making the situation more complicated than it needs to be.

On the ice, Hughes continues to be everything Minnesota hoped for when it made that massive trade. He has four goals and 20 points through 15 games, ranks second in the league in average ice time at 27:37 per game, and sits fourth in the NHL with 16 assists.

For now, both sides appear content to let the season play out. But with the trade deadline creeping closer and no extension in sight, the pressure on Guerin to make a defining decision will only intensify.
