The Minnesota Wild made a huge move earlier this season when they acquired star defenseman Quinn Hughes in a blockbuster deal with the Vancouver Canucks. Since that time fans of the Wild have had the chance to see Hughes work his magic on the blue line, so much so in fact that he now seems destined to establish a new franchise record.

In fact on Saturday afternoon, Hughes entered into a 3-way tie for the most points ever recorded in a single season by a Wild defenseman, joining Ryan Suter and... Ryan Suter for sole possession of first place. Hughes picked up an assist during the Wild's 4-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators, bringing him up to 51 points on the season, tying him with former Wild defenseman Ryan Suter who hit the mark twice during his career with the Wild. Suter recorded 51 points during both the 2015-16 and 2017-18 NHL seasons, but it seems very likely that both those records will fall in short order to Hughes.

Now that would be an impressive accomplishment in its own right, but what makes this even more ridiculous is the fact that Hughes played his first 26 games of the season as a member of the Vancouver Canucks. Hughes has been with the Wild for just 44 games, but despite that has managed to tie a record that Suter established in 78 and 82 games respectively.

Of course Hughes has only just begun to find his footing with the Minnesota Wild so there are no doubt plenty more records of this nature that will fall to this incredibly talented young defenseman.
