According to reporter Michael Russo, speaking on The Sheet, Hughes reportedly carries a sense of obligation toward the Wild because of the massive trade package Minnesota surrendered to acquire him from the Vancouver Canucks.

"I think there's a feeling from his side that he deserves to pay that back," Russo said.

Wild general manager Bill Guerin offered a measured update during a recent appearance on Judd's Hockey Show, acknowledging ongoing talks with Hughes' camp while stopping short of projecting any timeline. "These things take time, they are big decisions for players and teams, so it's a process to work through it," Guerin said.

That careful tone marks a notable shift from earlier in the summer, when Wild owner Craig Leipold publicly guaranteed a new deal would happen. Observers have taken note of the change, and the conversation surrounding Hughes has shifted from near certainty to genuine uncertainty.

Term reportedly remains the central obstacle. Minnesota wants a lengthy commitment to justify the assets it gave up. Hughes, according to multiple reports, has shown interest in a shorter deal, one that could align his path to unrestricted free agency with the expiration of Jack Hughes' contract in New Jersey.

Meanwhile, the Devils have quietly positioned themselves as the only franchise capable of uniting all three Hughes brothers. New Jersey reportedly has more than $30 million in projected cap space for 2027-28 and a deep pool of trade assets should they pursue a deal before free agency.

Two paths remain on the table. Hughes could sign a long-term extension in Minnesota, honoring the debt he reportedly feels. Or, if talks continue to stall, a blockbuster trade to New Jersey or elsewhere could materialize.
