This just in, the Anaheim Ducks have traded captain Radko Gudas to the Florida Panthers in exchange for AJ Greer.

Both Gudas and Greer and pending unrestricted free agent, so this is really a swap of two players who may still hit the open market on July 1st. However, it's believed that a change of scenery, or in Gudas' case a return to familiar scenery, may convince these players to re-up before the opening of the free agent period on July 1st.

“Radko Gudas captained our club with heart and soul over the last two seasons while making a great impact in our community,” said Ducks General Manager Pat Verbeek in a prepared statement. We offer our thanks and wish him great success going forward. We hope to sign A.J. to a contract and look forward to what he can bring to our club."

Gudas, of course was a big part of the Panthers' defensive corps from 2020 - 2023 and few players have ever embodied the identity of the Panthers quite like Gudas. While his first stint with the organization lasted only three seasons, the hard-hitting Czech defenseman quickly became one of the emotional leaders of the locker room and a fan favorite thanks to his fearless style of play. Now, after spending the past three seasons with the Anaheim Ducks, Gudas is heading back to South Florida in what feels like a reunion that has been years in the making. The Panthers know exactly what they're getting: toughness, leadership, playoff experience, and a player who never hesitates to put his body on the line for his teammates.

Gudas' NHL journey has never been about flashy offensive numbers. Since breaking into the league with the Tampa Bay Lightning, he has built his reputation as one of hockey's most punishing defensemen. Stops with the Philadelphia Flyers and Washington Capitals only reinforced that identity, as opponents learned very quickly that every trip into his corner would come with a heavy price. Over the years, Gudas also matured his game considerably, evolving from a player who occasionally crossed the line into one who became a dependable shutdown defender capable of playing difficult minutes against top competition.

That evolution reached another level after he signed with Florida in 2020. One of Bill Zito's first free-agent signings as general manager, Gudas immediately became an integral piece of the Panthers' culture. His booming hits energized both the bench and the crowd, while his willingness to sacrifice his body made him one of the league's premier shot blockers. More importantly, teammates consistently praised his leadership and infectious personality. Whether he was delivering a momentum-changing hit or keeping the room loose off the ice, Gudas became one of the emotional engines behind Florida's rise from playoff hopeful to Stanley Cup contender.

His biggest contribution came during the Panthers' memorable run to the 2023 Stanley Cup Final. Although he wasn't filling the scoresheet, Gudas was everywhere that spring. He frustrated opposing forwards, logged difficult defensive assignments, and provided exactly the kind of physical edge that every championship-caliber team needs. His intensity was perfectly captured in several unforgettable playoff moments that quickly became part of Panthers lore, illustrating just how invested he was in every shift and every game.

When Gudas left for Anaheim in free agency during the summer of 2023, there was a sense that Florida had lost more than just a defenseman. Salary cap realities forced the Panthers to move on, while the Ducks rewarded him with a lucrative three-year contract and eventually named him team captain. In Anaheim, Gudas continued to provide veteran leadership to a young rebuilding club, helping establish accountability and professionalism while maintaining the physical style that has defined his entire career.

Now the Panthers have decided the time is right for a reunion. Florida's championship window remains wide open, and adding a battle-tested veteran like Gudas gives the blue line another layer of grit and experience. His familiarity with Paul Maurice's system, his close relationships with many players still on the roster, and his proven ability to thrive under playoff pressure should make this a seamless transition.

For Panthers fans, this move is about more than adding defensive depth. It's about bringing back one of the players who helped establish the hard-nosed identity that transformed Florida into one of the NHL's elite franchises. Gudas may be older than he was during his first stint in Sunrise, but his competitive fire hasn't faded. If anything, the Panthers are getting back a player who understands exactly what it takes to win in Florida—and who will be eager to help chase another Stanley Cup.
