As a free agent before signing with the Anaheim Ducks, defenseman Radko Gudas received offers from the Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames. In a recent interview with Czech outlet DenikSport, Gudas explained that he had offers from these three teams when free agency opened, but chose the Ducks instead.

The reason is quite clear: Gudas had not intention of dealing with the pressure from Canadian media. He admitted how he avoided all three markets due to how harsh the media can be on players there.

The Panthers faced Toronto in the second round of the postseason this spring, and Gudas could see feel the pressure the Maple Leafs were facing despite going up against them. While not many players expressed the dislike for the pressure of the markets and fans in Canada, Gudas does not fear the criticism for saying it out loud.

Gudas a three-year, $12 million deal with the Ducks on the opening day of free agency. He is a nice addition to Anaheim, especially with the experience he gained during the Panthers’ long playoff run with his reckless style that intimates all opponents.

He surely would have been a great boost for all three Canadian teams on their back ends, but Gudas prefers to stay away from the spotlight, and most especially Canada.
