Rangers forced to make a roster move after a scary injury last night.
The New York Rangers have been forced to make a roster move after a scary looking incident on Saturday night led to an injury.
On Sunday, the Rangers officially placed 31 year old defenseman Carson Soucy on injured reserve, a move that comes as no surprise to anyone who witnessed what happened to Soucy during a game against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Soucy was injured when an attempted hit on Penguins forward Rickard Rakell went horribly wrong, with Rakell proving to be too quick and elusive for the Blue Shirts blue liner. Instead of making contact with Rakell, Soucy would go flying over Rakell's trailing leg as that was the only thing left where Rakell had once been. This would in turn cause Soucy to go crashing hard into the boards, head first, with his head and neck bending at a frightening angle as he torpedoed himself into the boards.
We know that Soucy will be out at least a week as a result of the designation, which isn't so bad all things considered, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if he was out for even longer given just how bad this one looked.
Here is a second look from the reverse angle:
As a result of the injury to Soucy, 29 year old Connor Mackey will now get his chance to have an impact at the National Hockey League level after being called up from the American Hockey League's Hartford Wolfpack. Mackey appeared in just 2 games for the Rangers last season and had no goals and no assists, but did pick up 5 penalty minutes during his relatively brief time with the team.
I can only hope that Soucy will make a full and speedy recovery, and I'm thankful that he wasn't more seriously injured given just how terrible this could have been.
