Rangers lose Kaapo Kakko to ugly looking injury on Saturday.
Kakko goes down awkwardly.
It has been a difficult season for New York Rangers forward Kaapo Kakko and things may have taken yet another ugly turn on Saturday afternoon during an early game for the Rangers.
Kakko, who has already missed significant time due to injury this season, took an awkward fall into the corner boards during the first period Rangers game against the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday. Kakko was skating into the corner in a race for the puck but would only manage to be the second man to reach the puck. Kakko then seemingly tried to adjust his positioning and fell awkwardly back onto his own leg, with his right leg seemingly absorbing the worst part of the awkward fall.
Here's a short replay of the moment that Kakko fell down to the ice, as you can see all of his weight comes crashing down on that right leg, a leg that just buckles underneath the pressure of that weight.
Kakko was once a highly touted prospect and was selected in the first round (2nd overall) of the 2019 National Hockey League Entry Draft by the Rangers, but his recent struggles have no doubt been frustrating for the Rangers both from a short term perspective as well as from a more long term perspective when it comes to his development as an NHL player.Kakko was having himself a decent season on the wing with 7 goals and 9 assists for a total of 16 points in the 40 regular season games he managed to suit up for, and boasted a plus minus rating of +8 on a good Rangers team this season.
There are now however legitimate questions about his ability to stay healthy with a serious upper body injury back in February that kept him out long term and now this latest incident. Should this also prove to be a significant injury, and it certainly looked like it had the potential to be, it could have an impact on the Rangers as they move into the Stanley Cup playoffs when the regular season ends just roughly 2 weeks from now.
