This is a disaster for the New York Rangers.

According to a report from Rangers insider Vincent Z. Mercogliano, the Rangers have made the move to place defenseman Adam Fox on long term injured reserve following an injury he suffered on Saturday. The move means that Fox will be out of action until at least the end of December with a LTIR designation requiring a player to miss at least 24 days or 10 games.

Fox was injured during a game between the Rangers and the Tampa Bay Lightning when he was on the receiving end of a big hit from Lightning forward Brandon Hagel near the end boards. Fox appeared to see the hit coming and placed his hand against the boards to brace for the impact, potentially leading to the injury that he suffered.

After the contact Fox appeared to be favoring his arm, although that is only speculation on my part at this time. Here is a look at the replay of the hit:

Fox is one of the most important players on the Rangers roster and any kind of significant injury here would have been a disaster for the Rangers, and unfortunately this appears to be a fairly serious one. Fox was having a solid season despite his team's struggles with 3 goals and 22 assists already on the season, a total of 25 points in just 26 games. Fox of course also plays a ton of minutes for the Rangers, averaging over 24 minutes a night this season prior to his injury.

A huge loss and one that could extend far beyond the month of December.
