Not the start anyone expected this season…

The New York Rangers need to realize the 2025-26 season is underway. Under new head coach Mike Sullivan, the Rangers have only won two games in six outings, and have set an embarrassing record on Tuesday.

By not scoring through the first two periods of their game against the Edmonton Oilers last night, the Rangers have established a record among active teams for the longest stretch to start a season without scoring a goal on home ice.

The record was previously held by the 2001-02 Florida Panthers, who went 155:17 of ice time at home before scoring their first goal.

To make things worse, the Rangers failed to record a goal in the third frame as well and were shut out 2-0 by goalie Stuart Skinner and Edmonton.

After the game, Rangers veteran star forward Mika Zibanejad did not know what to say. Instead, he let out a:

“I don’t know if I should laugh or cry.”

Fans online quickly replied to Zibanejad and the rest of his teammates that crying is the answer because of how embarrassing the record is…

One fan suggested: “How about score? Is that an option?”

However, players aren’t frustrated yet, it seems. In postgame comments, Will Borgen admitted that the level of frustration is low because the Rangers believe they are playing well.

“Not a lot because we’re playing good. The last two games have been two of the best games we’ve played this year.”

And even captain J.T. Miller seemed confident and doesn’t want it to be overhyped.

The Rangers had their home opener on the first day of the season, but fell 3-0 to the Pittsburgh Penguins, and went on to lose 1-0 at the hands of the Washington Capitals on Sunday, with Arturs Silovs and Charlie Lindgren getting the shutout for their respective teams.

Fans might be encouraged by this fact from NHL Stats: “However, the Rangers don’t hold the record for the longest scoreless streak in NHL history just yet, as the Pittsburgh Pirates (not to be confused with the MLB team) went 187:19 of ice time at home without a goal in the 1928-29 season. The Pirates as a franchise operated from 1915 to 1931, but were only known as the Pirates from 1925 to 1930.”

There is hope.

New York is currently 2-3-0 through their first five games of the season, and are back on the road on Thursday when they’ll face the Maple Leafs in Toronto and appear to have a better chance to score away from MSG.
