The New York Rangers showed their true colors over the weekend, displaying tremendous class and kindness towards an opponent that they would be competing against moments later and doing so at a time when they were very unlikely to receive any credit for doing so.
On Saturday night, the Rangers faced off against the Seattle Kraken and of course playing for the Kraken was veteran defenseman Brandon Montour. Montour recently suffered a terrible personal tragedy when he lost his older brother Cameron after a years long battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, more commonly known as ALS.
Montour was extremely emotional when he announced the news and his message clearly touched many of us in the hockey community, including opposing players in the NHL.
Prior to the start of Saturday's game several members of the Rangers would skate over to Montour to offer their condolences for the loss of his brother during warmups, but there was one moment in particular that stood out for many. As Montour stood near the red line he was joined by opposing defenseman Adam Fox of the Rangers. Fox, whose father in law is also currently battling ALS, appeared to have a heartfelt moment with Montour with both men exchanging words and smiling before giving one another pats of encouragement and heading back to their respective teams.
The Rangers certainly didn't have to show that level of kindness to their opponent and I doubt very much that they thought anyone would even notice, which makes the gesture that much more beautiful. It was a small gesture but one that speaks to just how closely knit the hockey community truly is, and one that reflects very well on the true character of the Rangers roster.
