This just in, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman has reported that the New York Rangers and defenseman Braden Schneider have settled on a one year, $5.5 million deal following arbitration.

Schneider has quietly developed into one of the more dependable young defensemen in the NHL since breaking into the league with the New York Rangers during the 2021-22 season. Selected 19th overall in the 2020 NHL Draft, the Prince Albert, Saskatchewan native quickly earned the trust of the Rangers' coaching staff thanks to his physical style, steady defensive play and willingness to block shots. While he has never been known as a high-end offensive defenseman, Schneider has steadily rounded out his game, becoming a reliable top-four option capable of handling difficult defensive assignments while regularly logging more than 20 minutes per night.

Despite his importance to the Rangers, Schneider's name has surfaced in trade rumors for the better part of the last two seasons. Much of that speculation has had little to do with his performance and everything to do with New York's salary-cap situation and organizational depth on the blue line. With Adam Fox firmly entrenched as the club's No. 1 right-shot defenseman and the Rangers frequently pursuing veteran upgrades, Schneider has often been viewed by rival teams as one of New York's most valuable trade chips. His age, affordable contract history and team-friendly control made him an attractive asset whenever the Rangers were linked to star players or major deadline acquisitions.

Those rumors only intensified as Schneider approached restricted free agency this summer. Some around the league wondered whether general manager Chris Drury would use the 24-year-old as part of the club's ongoing roster retool rather than commit significant money to a third right-shot defenseman. Instead, the Rangers made it clear they still believe Schneider is an important part of their future by agreeing to a one-year, $5.5 million contract, avoiding salary arbitration in the process. That contract gives both sides additional flexibility. Schneider receives a substantial raise while betting on himself ahead of another trip through restricted free agency, and the Rangers retain a dependable, physical defenseman without making a lengthy financial commitment during a transitional offseason. For the upcoming season, Schneider will once again be expected to provide stability on the Rangers' blue line while helping anchor the penalty kill and matching up against some of the league's top forwards. Even if the trade speculation never fully disappears, his new contract suggests New York still views him as a key piece of its defensive core. Should Schneider continue to elevate his all-around game, the Rangers may eventually decide he's far more valuable wearing Broadway Blue than serving as the centerpiece of another blockbuster trade.
