It is getting crowded in between the pipes in New York City as the Rangers are are currently carrying three goaltenders in Henrik Lundqvist, Alexandar Georgiev and Igor Shesterkin.

However, Larry Brooks of the New York Post does not believe the Rangers will trade veteran goalie Lundqvist ahead of the deadline.

They might do worse.

Brooks believes the Rangers will start using a rotation of Shesterkin and  Georgiev, relegating Lundqvist to a third-string role. He adds the Rangers could make a clean break with the 37-year-old by buying out his contract in June, therefore clearing $3 million in space for next season, while adding a $1.5 million cap hit for the following year.

It is sad to see that Lundqvist’s career could be put on hold like this while another team might be willing to offer him a contract. And, who knows, maybe another chance at winning a Stanley Cup before he retires.

The King has been outplayed by both Shesterkin, recalled last month from the AHL, and Georgiev. The latter is 12-10-1 this season with a .909 save percentage and 3.12 GAA, while Shesterkin has a 4-1 record since joining the Rangers with a .922 save percentage and a 2.61 goals-against average.

As for Lundqvist, he has a 10-11-3 record this season with a .907 save percentage and a 3.13 goals-against average. He got the start in just two contests in January before making back-to-back starts to open the month of February.

Brooks added that the Rangers have no desire to trade Georgiev, despite his name getting mentioned more than once, which could mean their decision is already made on Lundqvist…
