Ouch.
There's a good chance that Calgary Flames defenseman Rasmus Andersson will be getting a call from the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety after he let his frustration get the better of him on Saturday night.
Andersson and the Flames were taking on provincial rivals the Edmonton Oilers in a matchup that has become known as The Battle of Alberta, when things got heated between the Flames defenseman and Oilers forward Kailer Yamamoto. When I say it got heated between the two I should say that Andersson took exception to the fact that Yamamoto was inside the crease of the Calgary Flames net and proceeded to maul the much smaller Oilers forward for the offense.
Much of the mauling that Yamamoto received was typical of what you would expect to see in the sport of hockey, but Andersson may very well have stepped over a line when he appeared to deliberately drive his helmet into the face of Yamamoto for a headbutt. Andersson shoved the smaller man into the boards with some force and then appeared to aim his own head at the head of his unsuspecting opponent, catching Yamamoto square in the face.
You can see it for yourself in this short replay:
The incident was part of a larger scrum during the first period, something that is not so uncommon when these two teams face one another, but in spite of that it has not gone unnoticed. During tonight's Hockey Night in Canada broadcast of the game it was brought into focus and there was some debate as to whether or not this could earn Andersson supplemental discipline beyond tonight's game in the form of a suspension.
It would be an unfortunate way to start the season for Andersson who, alongside the Flames, was making his regular season debut tonight against the Oilers. It is too early to talk about a potential suspension for Andersson at this time however given the fact that we still do not know whether or not the league's Department of Player Safety even has any intention of reviewing this incident.
