Rasmus Dahlin gets penalized from the penalty box!

Back in the box!

In all my years of covering hockey, this is the first time I ever saw this penalty called during an NHL game. On Thursday night, the Sabres hosted the Chicago Blackhawks in Buffalo and during the second period, defenseman Rasmus Dahlin found himself in the penalty box for a roughing minor against Reese Johnson.

Just before his time was up in the penalty box, Dahlin saw his teammates rushing towards the Blackhawks’ net and meant well when he got his stick out, ready to pounce on the puck and break away to get on the board. However, he got his stick out on the ice too early and ended up getting penalized with another minor, this time for interference from the bench.

This is what the sequence looked like:

On the official website of the National Hockey League, the call is literally written as Interference by the bench! Dahlin’s stat sheet only got the two minutes for roughing Johnson, though he was back in the box.

Besides his time spent in the penalty box, including this very rare interference minor, Dahlin also managed to record a goal, his 13th of the season and put up a +1 rating in the Sabres’ 3-0 shutout with over the Blackhawks. Dahlin leads all defenseman in the league with his 13 goals this season, and he is currently on pace for 25 tallies this year.

I guess with those stats and production on the ice, the Sabres can more easily forgive Dahlin for his weird penalty from the penalty box!
